Artes históricas en el Museum of the Plains Indian

El Museum of the Plains Indian en Browning tiene exposiciones que representan la rica diversidad de las artes históricas de la tribu. Pude conocer mucho sobre los artistas y artesanos nativos norteamericanos gracias a las exposiciones de trajes tradicionales, aspectos ceremoniales y obras de arte.

Blackfeet Heritage Center

Frente al Museum of the Plains Indian se encuentra el Blackfeet Heritage Center. Mientras lo recorría, disfrutando las detalladas obras de arte creadas con gran habilidad, Ernie, un anciano pies negros, se me acercó. Me habló sobre la historia, las costumbres y los rituales de la tribu. En los funerales, los pies negros ponían a los difuntos sobre un árbol y ahí los dejaban y sus seres queridos se cortaban el cabello o, incluso, los dedos para demostrar respeto a su espíritu. El anciano también me habló sobre el festival Pow Wow y una ceremonia religiosa llamada la Ceremonia de la Pipa.

De todas las historias que me contó, una en particular se me quedó grabada. Y fue una sobre cómo respetan a los animales: su poder curativo, el instinto y la predicción de las cosas. Los nativos norteamericanos, me dijo, se daban nombres de animales por el respeto que se les tenía. Aprendí mucho ahí.

Viva la vida de los indios pies negros

En la pradera de la reserva india, los tipis descansan en silencio. Al entrar a la Lodgepole Gallery and Tipi Village, el propietario y artista, Darrell, nos da una cálida bienvenida. La galería exhibe artesanías y tambores hechos de cuero de bisonte y wapití, que también pueden adquirirse como regalos. Aquí usted puede disfrutar de recorridos culturales a sitios históricos en la reserva. Por la noche disfrutamos de la tradicional cocina de los pies negros y dormimos en un tipi... Fue en realidad el lugar indicado para vivir la experiencia de los nativos norteamericanos, incluyendo su auténtica cultura, historia y costumbres.

Después de conocer un poco sobre la historia, cultura y presente de los nativos norteamericanos en Montana, sentí que había aprendido mucho sobre los Estados Unidos. Regresamos satisfechos por saber más sobre los nativos norteamericanos en Montana. Siempre atesoraré en mi corazón el conocimiento y la experiencia que aquí recibí.

Across the street from the Museum of the Plains Indian is the Blackfeet Heritage Center. As I walked around, enjoying the detailed and skilled art exhibits, a Blackfeet elder, Ernie, approached me. He told me all about the tribe’s history, customs and rituals. At burials, the Blackfeet would put the deceased on a tree and leave the body there for good, and their significant others would cut their hair or even fingers to show respect to the spirit. The elder also talked about the Pow Wow festival and a religious ceremony called The Pipe Ceremony.

Out of all the stories he shared with me, one thing in particular stayed in my mind deeply. It was about how they respected the animals – their healing power, the instinct and predictions of things. The Native Americans would name themselves after animal names out of respect, he said. I learned a lot here.

In the open land on the Indian reservation, a number of tipis sat quietly. As we walked into the Lodgepole Gallery and Tipi Village, owner-artist Darrell gave us a warm welcome. The gallery exhibits pieces such as crafts and drums that are made out of elk and bison hide, which can also be purchased as gifts. Here, you can enjoy cultural history tours to historical sites around the reservation. At night, we enjoyed traditional Blackfeet Indian cuisine and slept in a tipi. This was truly the place to experience Native American life, including authentic culture, history and customs.

After learning about Native American history and culture in Montana, I felt like I had learned about the USA in a true sense. We got back on the road satisfied, knowing more about Montana. The knowledge and experience I received will be a precious treasure in my heart forever.
